First of all, let's look at what happens in your body when you get stressed.

You might not have thought before that stress can make chemical changes happen in your body. Here is a simplified explanation of what's going on inside.

When an emergency is over, the system usually shuts off and everything goes back to normal. Once you have dealt with the mammoth or traffic jam, it’s quite easy to get back to normal.

However, mental stress situations can continue far longer than physical stressors.

  • What about when the neighbours play loud music night after night?
  • Or you have to work to tight deadlines all the time?
  • Or you are worrying about bills?
Chronic stress means that your emergency system has no chance to reset to Standby. It gets stuck in Active mode.
